The Story of the Pencil

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

A boy was watching his grandmother write a letter. At one point, he asked:

‘Are you writing a story about what we’ve done? Is it a story about me?’

His grandmother stopped writing her letter and said to her grandson:

‘I am writing about you, actually, but more important than the words is the pencil I’m using. I hope you will be like this pencil when you grow up.’

Intrigued, the boy looked at the pencil. It didn’t seem very special.

‘But it’s just like any other pencil I’ve ever seen!’

‘That depends on how you look at things. It has five qualities which, if you manage to hang on to them, will make you a person who is always at peace with the world.

‘First quality: you are capable of great things, but you must never forget that there is a hand guiding your steps. We call that hand God, and He always guides us according to His will.

‘Second quality: now and then, I have to stop writing and use a sharpener. That makes the pencil suffers a little, but afterwards, he’s much sharper. So you, too, must learn to bear certain pain and sorrows, because that will make you a better person.

‘Third quality: the pencil always allows us to use an eraser to rub out any mistakes. This means that correcting something we did is not necessarily a bad thing; it helps to keep us on the road to justice.

‘Fourth quality: what a really matter in a pencil is not its wooden exterior, but the graphite inside. So always pay attention to what is happening inside you.

‘Finally, the pencil’s fifth quality: it always leaves a mark. In just the same way, you should know that everything you do in life will leave a mark, so try to be conscious of that in your every action’

O déesse de l'amour, ne me quierre pas!
Je me réjouis de vous voir si nombreus..

Avant toute chose, n'oubliez jamais ques je vous aime..

Vous me pardonerez, Mesdames,

Si je m'adresse d'abord aux hommes

Mais c'est qu'en Amour - vous serez d'accord avec moi -

La plupart d'entre eux n'y entendent rien,

Ou pas grand chose..

Holiday

is a precious time, although is only in the weekend. I use my free time to tidy my house up and organize the files. And of course, interact with the neighbors.

The other day, the neighbor children helped me cleaning the garden. It was sooo nice. Even in my parent’s house, I never had this experience. The children are so sweet. This is one of the reasons I want to stay longer in Papua.

However, one of my neighbors (=adult) threw an “annoying” question. “Have you think about get married and have a “normal” life?” Excuse me, normal life? What does it mean?

No worries, I am not the same person you used to know. I did not reply that question with a snappy answer like: married? Not interested ;) I just smile and we had discussed about the bla bla bla – unimportant topic, but they are happy (I guess! ;p) Anyway, they will not understand about have dreams, kick the obstacles off and make them happened.

End of the story? Nope. Because – damn!- I am thinking about “have a normal life”. What is it like to have a house, going to the office from Monday to Friday, open the private practice in the evening, switch on the television, have a chat with your family, feeding your pet, reading a story for your kids (if you have any), cooking (and anybody else will give a compliment or complaint, depends on your cooking).. Sadly, I realized one thing: I never buy expensive furniture or house’s accessories because I always think that I will not stay for a long time. Never. Every time I am going to the shops, supermarket etc, what I always looking for is the thing I need during traveling. Head lamps, cable extension, survival kit, medical kit, and so on. Every time I read the magazines like ASRI or IDEA, I always think that “They are very beautiful, I will buy those at some times”. Why not now?

I have a dream. Unfortunately- or fortunately?-, it is not include “a normal life” like what most people always think

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference
